As we move into a busy second half of the term, there are several key dates, opportunities, and milestones coming up across our VCE VM and ERPP programs.
Hands-on industry experience remains a cornerstone of our practical learning programs, with upcoming Work Learning placements running from Monday 7 September to Friday 18 September for Year 10 ERPP and Year 11 VCE VM students.
Additionally, our Year 11 Sport and Business Academy students will head out on their placement from Monday 14 September to Friday 18 September.
We wish all students heading out into the workplace the best of luck as they build valuable skills and professional connections.
Meanwhile, our Year 12 VCE VM students are preparing their final Work Related Skills portfolios. As part of this capstone experience, students will sit down with a member of the College Leadership Team to present their work and reflect on their achievements and journey during their time at Parade. Students preparing these portfolios should reach out directly to their WRS teachers for guidance and support.
During the term, we have so many wonderful opportunities for our students to participate in offsite excursions, cementing knowledge and implementing skills from the topics that we work on in our classrooms. These excursions are an opportunity for our students to put into practice the real world learning they are doing with their teachers. We ask for your support to encourage your child to attend these excursions and participate, connecting to local communities and representing the College.
On Monday 27 July, Year 12 Academy and VCE VM students will attend the Escape Rooms and MCG, participating in team challenges which connects to their PDS Units 3 and 4.
Students in Year 10 ERPP will attend an incursion at Bundoora called ‘Your Choicez’.
Tenete retreats are in full swing for our Year 12 students. This is not an opt in excursion. This retreat ensures that students are living the EREA Touchstones, working with community and connecting to the world around them through service and learning. This is compulsory for our Year 12 students.
In Term 4, Year 10 students will participate in the RIJI (Real Industry Job Interviews), and they will need to complete a small amount of work in Humanities to ensure they are across what needs to be done on the day. Ms Hopkins will discuss this with students in the coming weeks.
The Curraghmore Garden is alive! The garden at Preston has been blooming with Ms Jo Cattlin working with students during lunch and other times of the day to ensure the garden is tidy, blooming, and giving us the chance to watch the students hard work come to life, providing fruit, vegetables, and herbs. It is exciting to see the garden looking so wonderful and this provides a space for our students to have ownership of a beautiful space within the campus at Preston.
Recently we had the Year 11s visit the Careers Expo at the Exhibition Centre and we were lucky enough to hear from the Australian Defence Force who visited the College in the first week of term. Students heard about the different careers available to them and how they can find something that suits them within the ADF.
We have noticed that there has been a drop off in attendance for some students. If students are away as they are unwell, please ensure this is added to PAM and let the Tutor teacher know that they are unwell and when they may return. It is vital we are aware of attendance issues for students to ensure that we can support students and families. Please see the below snip from MACS about how attendance can be affected when students miss as little as 1 day a fortnight. The impact can be incredibly large and within the VCE VM program, missing VET classes can affect the student not receiving a full certificate if their hours of attendance are not met.
Finally, with subject selection approaching, ERPP and VCE VM students are reminded to check their email inbox for the subject selection email and submit their preferred VET options. If in Year 11, students should ideally be picking the same VET unless they have and a discussion with Ms Hopkins about a change.
Students are encouraged to discuss their potential pathways with their Tutor teachers. Ms. Hopkins will also be visiting classes soon to walk students through their choices and help ensure they feel confident in the VET options they select.
