Three VCE students undertook the Future Animators program through the Banyule Nillumbik Tech School held across six full days in Term 2. Wesley Heafield Year 12 L01, Travis Ngo Year 11 B08, and Akein Hapugastenne Year 11 N01 explored the world of animation and the animation industry in Australia, learning new skills and creating a short piece of looping animation.
The final day was a celebration and screening of their work and Wesley’s animation was voted best in program, earning them a year’s subscription to the industry standard software, ToonBoom.

The Future Animators program at the Banyule Nillumbik Tech School was an amazing once in a lifetime opportunity. It was so incredible getting to learn how to create something I am really passionate about.
The program was led by Colin, a YouTube animator by the name of Onion Skin and industry professional that had worked on some of the high-quality shows that I personally love. And Colin was awesome, he was so good at explaining new things to the whole group and the way in which he let us work on our own for majority of the sessions and help us individually while walking around was the greatest way to make us actually learn how to use the program and understand what we could do with it.
I was able to learn so much during the program and by the end I was even more exited to animate that I was before I started the program. With all the new tools and techniques, I learned over the seven sessions I have more love for animating and find more joy in doing it. Bringing an idea of mine like a drawing or daydream to life is something I have always wanted to do and now I certainly can because of this course.

Other activities currently happening in the NLC are the Friday lunchtime Craft Club where students have started learning the art of origami, the completion of the World Cup reading challenge, and students taking part in the CBCA Shadow judging program.
