At the end of Term 1, VCE Physical Education students went to La Trobe University to undertake VO2 Max testing as part of their studies. This test measures the total amount of oxygen that the body can process during high intensity exercise to indicate an athlete’s aerobic level of fitness. It requires the participants to wear a mask measuring the total amount of air being inhaled and exhaled as they cycled at increasing intensities over a 20-minute period.

Two students from each class conducted the VO2 Max Test, whilst remaining students assisted the technicians to ensure accurate results were obtained from the test. Some boys were also able to complete a 30 second Windgate test that measures the peak power of the athlete and how quickly they fatigue during maximal activity.

The data gathered from this practical was used in their most recent SAC and will serve as a great example to use during revision later in the year. Well done to the boys who volunteered to participate in the testing, some impressive results were seen. This group now looks forward to a golf simulator excursion coming up in Term 2 to assist them with their understanding of biomechanics.
