On Wednesday 26 August, eight enthusiastic Year 8 budding mathematicians represented the College at the annual Maths Games Day. Competing against students from a range of schools across Victoria, our teams worked collaboratively to solve challenging mathematical problems, test their reasoning skills, and apply creative thinking in a fun and engaging environment. The day provided an excellent opportunity for students to deepen their appreciation of mathematics while building teamwork and problem-solving skills.
Below, one of our participants reflects on their experience of the day.
Recently, we went to PEGS Keilor East Campus for Maths Game Day, and it turned out to be a great learning experience. We were accompanied by Mr Elmore and Mr Houlihan, who helped us throughout the day and facilitated everything smoothly.
We competed in three competitions: two team events and one individual one. Every competition posed different challenges for us. In the case of the team competitions, there was a lot of teamwork involved, since we had to communicate with each other, share the work between us, and do it under time pressure. As far as the individual competition is concerned, luck and strategy mattered most, since we were playing games such as 5 Alive and Dots and Boxes, and it was interesting to see whether we would be able to apply the skills we had learned in a real-life setting.
This day was very interesting because of the atmosphere and our interactions with the students from other schools. Solving interesting maths problems and enjoying the fact that we managed to solve many of them added to the positive experience and demonstrated that maths can be quite entertaining when it is presented as a challenge.
Overall, Maths Game Day turned out to be an enjoyable experience.
