Introduction to Philosophy - Code: 0hPL

Philosophy involves the asking of fundamental questions, studying the attempts of people to answer these questions and attempting to answer them yourself. Examples of such questions are: What do we really know? What is it for something to exist? Is the physical universe all that exists? What and where is our mind? Does science give us ‘the truth’? What does it mean for something to be good or right? How should one live a good life? In answering these questions philosophers provide arguments for the positions that they take up. Analysing these arguments is, therefore, an important part of the philosophical process. Philosophy also, therefore, involves the study of reasoning – to find out what makes an argument valid. The skills learnt here will be practised in class discussions and in the writing of essays about the sort of philosophical questions mentioned above.
